The hospital operates under the stewardship of Baitush Sharaf Anjuman–E–Ittehad Bangladesh, a distinguished national welfare organization recognized for its unwavering commitment to social upliftment, humanitarian assistance, and faith-inspired public service.

Over the decades, Cox’s Bazar Baitush Sharaf Hospital has evolved into one of the most respected charitable healthcare establishments in the southern region of Bangladesh. Through its specialized ophthalmic services and rehabilitation initiatives for visually impaired individuals, the institution has consistently extended hope and healing to marginalized communities residing in remote coastal belts and rugged hilly territories. Its enduring reputation has been built upon compassion, accessibility, and an unrelenting dedication to underserved populations.

The hospital’s journey commenced with a singular mission: safeguarding vision and preventing avoidable blindness. During its formative years, eye care facilities were virtually nonexistent throughout Cox’s Bazar and its surrounding localities. Given the intricate nature of ophthalmic treatment and the substantial financial burden associated with specialized eye care, countless residents were left without viable medical options. Traveling to metropolitan centers for treatment was beyond the means of many families, particularly those living in economically disadvantaged circumstances.

As a consequence, numerous adults and children alike experienced preventable vision loss, often leading to lifelong hardship. Recognizing this pressing public health challenge, Cox’s Bazar Baitush Sharaf Hospital initiated comprehensive eye care activities in 1995 with the objective of preserving sight and restoring dignity to vulnerable segments of society.

A significant milestone was achieved in 1997 when the institution introduced the Modular Eye Care (MEC) program. This initiative was established through the technical guidance and financial collaboration of the Royal Commonwealth Society for the Blind (RCSB) – Sightsavers International Bangladesh. The program was designed to combat avoidable blindness and bring the gift of vision back to individuals who had long lived in darkness.

Building upon this foundation, the hospital expanded its outreach in 2000 by integrating Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) into its existing eye care framework. This addition enabled a more holistic approach, addressing not only medical intervention but also the social reintegration and empowerment of visually impaired individuals.

In alignment with the global aspirations of Vision–2020, the Modular Eye Care program underwent a strategic transformation in 2005 and was restructured into a Comprehensive Eye Care Service (CES). This enhanced model broadened the scope of ophthalmic healthcare, ensuring a more inclusive and sustainable service delivery system.

Further strengthening its commitment to complete visual healthcare, the hospital incorporated a Low Vision (LV) Clinic into its Comprehensive Eye Care Service in 2006. This advancement allowed individuals with partial visual impairment to access specialized support, adaptive solutions, and rehabilitative resources tailored to their unique needs.
